Ditch Multitasking and Do This Instead, For Better Results and Less Stress
In this fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to do, be, and accomplish everything on our plate. And when we fall short, it can look as if we’re (not only) back where we started, but it can seem as if we haven’t accomplished anything at all. For the longest, I always thought my way of tackling goals was some quirky thing I did as an excuse to procrastinate, or better yet, a way to get out of doing a lot of work - when in fact, studies have shown that I was a trailblazer in goal setting all along (ha . . . see how I interjected some self-motivation right there).
Truth be told, multitasking will not only lead to burnout, but you’ll still be left with a jillion things undone. Read on to see why focusing on one item at a time will not only increase your productivity, but make getting to your desired goals easier, less stressful, and (dare I say) more fun.
When concentrating on one thing at a time, you’re able to focus on the most important thing. Simple enough, I'm sure, but hear me out. It’s easier to not get distracted by other things, when your focus is on that one thing. I don’t care how good you are at multitasking, if the task at hand calls for your undivided attention, doing it alongside something else makes it that much harder to focus on, thus making it that much harder to get done. Doing a lot at one time may make you appear as if you're accomplishing something, when in fact, behind the scenes, you're only spinning your wheels.
When you work on one task at a time, you’re putting all of your time and effort into that specific task. This will guarantee the quality of your work will be better than average. On the other hand, when you have too many things on your plate, you’re distracted and forced to divide your time and efforts to a whole bunch of things all at once, therefore sacrificing the quality of the work you put out. Quality over quantity always makes you stand out from the rest, because the excellence of your work is put on display for everyone to see. Besides, who wants to be the Jane of all trades, but master of none?
You know that feeling of anxiety and dread you experience when you’ve got a million things to do? Yep, that feeling. Let’s be honest – for some of us - we’re overtaken with these emotions with the mere thought of the million things we have overcrowding our plate. But tackling one task at a time eliminates those feelings of anxiety and overwhelm, as you happily scratch an item off your list, one-by-one. This way, you’ll actually start appreciating your work, which makes it that much more enjoyable and rewarding!
No More Sleepless Nights
Looking at your incomplete ‘to do’ list at the end of the day can be daunting and depressing. Why? Because you’ve spent the entire day working your tail off, without scratching anything off your list. It makes you dread going into the next day, because more often than not . . . it’ll probably go the same way. When you work on one thing at a time, you’ll more than likely get to scratch it off your list (watching it dwindle right before your eyes) and move on to the next thing, giving you a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment . . . allowing you to actually wake up the next day (not only) refreshed, but ready to take on the day’s assignment. Make it easy on yourself, so you can stop waking up in a cold sweat.
Prioritize With Ease
Mastering working on one thing at a time and prioritizing what’s most important, gets you to your goals faster. When you’re doing everything at the same time, you put everything on the same level of importance. It’s all in your perception. Because you’ve put everything on the same level, you’ve perceived everything on your list as something major, when in fact, it’s probably not. This makes you put forth unnecessary energy towards something that may take half the effort to complete. And what does this do? It causes you waste precious time you could be spending on something else.
For some people, this whole ‘working on one thing at a time’ way of managing your “To-Do List” will take some getting use to . . . I get that. But the benefits of tackling your assignments one at time, far outweigh whatever apprehensions you may have. Give it a try . . . I promise, you’ll thank me for it later.
